Censorship

Some Muses are just too radical or seek to unnecessarily harm and cause mental distress to others. In this case, Muses can be placed under enforced Fading also known as Censorship. This is carried out by a group of Muses disagreeing with a certain Muse's actions. If enough Muses disagree with the ideas, actions or personality of another Muse, that Muse will be Censored. This occurs as a stamp somewhere visible on the Muse's body that spells out the word 'CENSORED' in a capitalised font. When a Muse becomes Uncensored, the word fades away, but the borders of the stamp remain.

While under Censorship, a Muse is not permitted to use the Hub or access the Dream Connectome, and thus is unable to make themselves known to Jo. In rare cases they may be banished from Spindle altogether. Without Jo thinking about them and the stories they influence, they will eventually Fade away. The time for which a Muse is Censored for depends on the severity of their actions, and whether other Muses still think they should be Censored. Muses that survive Censorship without Fading tend to have a horrifying memory of coming very close to Fading away completely. This memory tends to change them as a person.

No single authority can induce Censorship, but exposing a wrong deed to Muse society at large can cause the perpetrating Muse to be Censored. Exposing dangerous Muses is usually carried out by the Academy of Thought.
