Sample Characters

To give you more of an idea of how Character Creation works, here are some examples of the sort of thing we're expecting.

Example 1 - Earl Grey

Character Name: Earl Grey
Character Pronouns: They/Them
Faction: Food For Thought
Ideal: Affiliation
Skills:

  • Strife: None
  • Seek: Moderate
  • Subvert: Moderate
  • Sculpt: None

Quirks (+4, -4):

  • A Secret Recipe (+)
  • A Good Listener (+)
  • Follower (-)
  • Fashionably Late (+)
  • Back from the Brink (-)
  • Clumsy (-)
  • Why Are You Like This? (+ AND -): A set of translucent grey/purplish butterfly wings that crinkle like old parchment and feel like silk often wrap around them like a cardigan. They still work, but they are highly flammable…
  • Mindbender (0)
  • Make Me Cry (0)

Private Bio:
Quiet and unassuming, no one would suspect the kind of past Grey led: one full of soaring through Vignettes, building and breaking bonds of Impressions however they saw fit. But this life came with regrets. Their wings lost their colour as though they had been bleached in the sun, and they became weaker as consequences caught up with them. In Food for Thought, Grey hopes to one day find redemption for what they've done, and build enough relationships to balance out the ones they broke.

Public Bio:
Grey is a quiet soul, happy to sip their tea and and observe in the corner of the cafe, nodding gracefully, eyes full of deep empathy as they listen to the colourful stories of other Muses. They are popular with many regulars for their calm and comforting demeanour, making many people feel understood.

Example 2 - Doctor Technobabble

Character Name: Doctor Technobabble
Character Pronouns: He/Him
Faction: NFWS
Ideal: Life
Skills:

  • Strife: None
  • Seek: Moderate
  • Subvert: Weak
  • Sculpt: Weak

Quirks (4+, 3-):

  • Juicetronic Invention (+): An inventory that can be used to carry around unrealistic amounts of stuff, computer-game style.
  • Resources (+): Including something appropriate as mad scientist minions/lab technicians/test subjects.
  • Deft (+)
  • Extra (+ AND -)
  • What could possibly go wrong? (-)
  • X days without accident (-)
  • Hit me harder (0)
  • Mindbender (0)

Private Bio:
Technobabble is mostly what he appears, with a lab full of bubbling goo, erratic sparks and pickled mutants in huge jars. When he gets around to doing actual research, his main interest is in testing the limits of applications of Tropes.

Public Bio:
Doctor Technobabble is a researcher at the NFWS, although some of his colleagues have complained that he's having too much fun playing the mad scientist and building Tesla coils to actually get any work done.

Example 3 - Juliet Smith

Character Name: Juliet Smith
Character Pronouns: She/her
Faction: Free Idea Forum (secretly) and Pure Inspiration
Ideal: Control
Skills:

  • Strife: Weak
  • Seek: Weak
  • Subvert: Moderate
  • Sculpt: None

Quirks (4+, 5-):

  • Covert Agent (+): Pure Inspiration
  • Quick Thinker (+)
  • Owed a Favour (+)
  • Deckbuilder (+)
  • Back from the Brink (-)
  • Wanderlust (-)
  • Responsibility (-): Once managed to get an Impression out of their Vignette for their own safety, and has been hiding them ever since.
  • Old School (-)
  • Bullet Magnet (-)
  • Make Me Cry (0)

Private Bio:
Since she was conceptualised, Juliet has been drawn to dystopian fiction, but always felt so sympathetic to the Impressions' suffering that she would try to fix things and help them. Older, supposedly wiser Muses always objected that she was ruining the stories, and Vignettes didn't exist for the benefit of their Impressions and should be reset to its dystopian state. This happened so much that none of her contributions remained long enough for her to replenish her Juice, and she came perilously close to Fading before relenting and working for a while on other genres.

With all her experience of dystopias, she started to notice themes in Spindle's society itself, in the controlling nature of the Academy and Pure Inspiration, but this time there was nobody to say she was ruining the narrative. After finding other like-minded Muses in the FIF, she infiltrated Pure Inspiration to find out what they might be hiding and weaken their stranglehold on Spindle from within.

Public Bio:
Juliet Smith is a recent addition to Pure Inspiration, but is already getting respect for pushing the boundaries in the highly advanced technique of Doing Art By Not Doing Art.
