If a Muse’s ideas and stories cease to be used by Jo for a prolonged amount of time, they gradually lose the Creative Juices they are made from and start to Fade away. Fading is the only way a Muse can cease to exist, and is accompanied by physical symptoms such as chipping away of human skin and clothes to the primordial Creative Juice beneath. As a result, these Muses start to look more and more like pure Juice, rather than their humanised personification. Muses that are close to Fading will start to feel physically weak and it is possible for them to lose parts of their form or personality. When a Muse Fades, they collapse into a pure puddle of Juice that eventually evaporates into the atmosphere around them.

When a Muse is Fading, emergency Juice transfusions can be attempted by NFWS, but this has only led to injury thus far. Fading can be a natural process, especially of Muses that have existed a long time, formed from ideas in Jo's childhood that they may not think of any more. However, Fading can also be enforced through society imposed Censorship. This process prevents Muses from using their Juice to change the direction of Vignettes or the world around them, giving them no creative outlet to impose their ideas upon Jo.

It is possible for Muses close to Fading to regain Juice through Jo renoticing them, perhaps through using the last of their Juice to make something that truly inspires Jo. This is common for Muses who had just ended their Censorship sentence, or if an older Muse gets a surge of Juice overnight from Jo rediscovering something they did in the past. Muses who have once come close to Fading, especially if it was against their will through Censorship, tend to harbour harrowing memories of that experience.
