Off in the distance of Far Dream, a squirrel kingdom and a fox tribe fight a war, unobserved by Musekind. With the foxes' new thumbs and the squirrels' various genetic enhancements, neither side is able to gain a decisive adantage, and the fight continues to escalate, with the only real winner being the lizards selling increasingly advanced armaments to both sides. The war burns slowly and steadily, until one day, Jo dies, the narrative still unresolved as the entire battlefield and both armies vanish all at once.
