Descent

Content Warnings

None.

Plot

The Youth continues her journey into the depth. She encounters a little girl who has lost her memories, shades that have lost their names and a hunter who has lost his arrows. She also re-encounters friends from her past, the Priestess and the Quick Brown Fox.

Landscape

The sea is vast, without edge. When one dives in so deep that the light from the sky can no longer reach you, faint and faraway lights appear. They are stars. The further one dives, the brighter the stars become, and would start to blink at different rates. Shadows, vast and small, occasionally swim by.

The tone of this Vignette is stranger than Journey. Space is behaving somewhat irregularly.

Key Impressions

  • The Youth: Playable. The seeker of Light, journeying to find the Great Pearl to fulfill the Goddess' prophecy.
  • The Weeping Girl: Not Playable. A girl who weeps by the sea and seems to have lost her memories. Appears to be about 7 or 8. Her tears are pearls.
  • The Hunter: Not Playable. He sits quietly in a cave on a lonely cliff, with a well-kept longbow and a sardonic smile, an empty quiver lying by his side. He claims to be hunting both the Primordial Clam and the Winged Goddess.
  • The Quick Brown Fox: Not Playable (unless you ask the Quick Brown Fox nicely). A sly, talking fox the Youth has previously encountered several times.
  • The Priestess: Playable. The Youth's best friend, daughter of the tribe's healer. She serves at the Winged Goddess' shrine and interprets auguries. She gave the Youth the prophecy that calls her to seek and retrieve the Great Pearl.

Scenes

  • 1: The Youth finds herself alone in a sea of stars. Those that were previously with her are lost to the waves, except the Weeping Girl. She is glowing. Shades cling to her and ask her to name them. Whatever the Youth gives the shades as a name, she loses from her own mind.
  • 2: The Youth is ragged down and falls asleep. She wakes up in the Hunter's cave. He claims to be hunting the Clam and the Goddess. He tells her that he can teach her how to hunt memories, but in exchange she must promise to help him hunt the Clam and the Goddess.
  • 3: The Hunter becomes the Youth's mentor. During her hunt, she encounters the Priestess and the Quick Brown Fox. The Youth and the Priestess gain their memories back, in exchange, they promise the Quick Brown Fox they will bring the Eternal Day.
  • 4: The Youth and the Priestess finds the Weeping Girl during her hunt and brings her back. The two question the Hunter his motives. The Hunter feeds the Weeping Girl memories, and suddenly she transforms into the Winged Goddess and springs out of the cave.
  • 5: The Winged Goddess fights the Primordial Clam that has just returned to the Abyss. The Youth assists the Hunter and traps them both. Blinding starlights - arrows of the Hunter - pierce the sea. The hunters emerge victorious. The old gods are slain. The Youth, the Priestess, and the Quick Brown Fox ascend with the Pearl of Sun.
